Sports Betting Apps Legal in California (2026)
No traditional sportsbook app is legal in California in 2026: DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM and Caesars are all geofenced out. These event-contract apps are available: Kalshi, Polymarket, ProphetX, OG and Novig. Here's what each does best, what it costs, and which to start with.

TL;DR:
No state-licensed sportsbook app works in California, but several event-contract apps accept California residents 21+ and let them trade real NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, college and international outcomes. Kalshi (broadest coverage, longest CFTC track record) is the default starting point. Polymarket has the deepest liquidity on marquee outcomes through its US app, which trades in dollars. ProphetX is the sports-first specialist, OG by Crypto.com covers sports and more, Novig is a peer-to-peer exchange for limit orders, and Sleeper and Chalkboard are fantasy and pick'em apps rather than CFTC-regulated exchanges. Rebet is not available in California. Offshore apps like Bovada and BetUS accept California users but operate without US regulatory backing; not recommended. Gains are taxable at federal and California state level (top CA marginal rate 13.3%).

No traditional sportsbook app is legal in California in 2026. DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars, ESPN BET, Fanatics, and Hard Rock Bet are all geofenced out. Kalshi, Polymarket, ProphetX, OG and Novig accept California residents (minimum age 18 on most of these apps, 21 on Novig; we recommend 21+) today and let you take real positions on the same NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL outcomes a sportsbook would price.
Below: every legal app, ranked by use case, with what it does best, what it costs, and who it's for. Plus the apps that aren't legal. And why offshore options like Bovada are a bad answer to the question.
What sports betting apps are legal in California?
Five apps accept eligible California residents (minimum age 18 on most, 21 on Novig; we recommend 21+): Kalshi, Polymarket, ProphetX, OG and Novig. They list event contracts instead of taking sportsbook bets, which is why they can operate in California while DraftKings can't. You trade against other users at prices between $0 and $1 that reflect the market's probability estimate.
| Platform | Key Features |
|---|---|
| Kalshi | broadest sports coverage, USD funding, longest CFTC track record |
| Polymarket | deepest liquidity on marquee outcomes, trades in US dollars |
| ProphetX | sports-first exchange, peer-to-peer pricing with no house margin, on iPhone, Android and web |
| OG by Crypto.com | CFTC-regulated event contracts on sports, crypto and economics |
| Novig | peer-to-peer sports event contracts where you set your own price |

Sleeper and Chalkboard, covered further down, are fantasy and pick'em apps rather than CFTC-regulated exchanges, so check each app for what it offers in California. Rebet is not available to California residents: it works only while you are physically in one of its eligible states.
Courts are still deciding whether state gambling law can apply to sports event contracts; the 9th Circuit, whose rulings cover California, sided with Nevada against Kalshi at the preliminary stage in August 2026. Full legal background in our California sports-betting legality guide and California prediction markets guide.
Sports betting apps NOT legal in California
Keep reading
Every state-licensed online sportsbook is unavailable. California has not authorized online sports betting (Propositions 26 and 27 both failed in November 2022), so none of these can operate in the state:
- DraftKings Sportsbook: geofenced out
- FanDuel Sportsbook: geofenced out
- BetMGM: unavailable
- Caesars Sportsbook: unavailable
- ESPN BET: unavailable
- Fanatics Sportsbook: unavailable
- Hard Rock Bet: unavailable
- bet365: unavailable
These apps detect California IPs and decline to take wagers. A VPN does not solve this. They also use device location, billing address, and payment-method geofencing, and using a VPN to circumvent geofencing violates each app's terms.
Our Take
The cleanest path for a California sports trader in 2026 is Kalshi for breadth plus one specialist app: ProphetX if you only trade sports, Novig if you want to set your own price, Polymarket if you want depth on big games.
Kalshi
Verdict: the default starting point for almost every California sports trader. CFTC-designated contract market since November 2020, broadest single-app coverage, USD funding, and the longest regulatory track record of any platform on this list.
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Sports covered | NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, college football and basketball, UFC, golf, tennis, World Cup and other internationals: outright winners, match outcomes, season win totals, championship futures, and a growing player-prop catalog |
| Funding | ACH (free, 1-3 business days), debit card (instant, small fee), wire (large amounts). USD only. |
| Fees | A transaction fee on each executed trade, worked out from the contract price and number of contracts and shown in the order ticket before you confirm. Cancelling an order is free. |
| Best for | Anyone wanting one app that covers everything. Especially strong for NFL, NBA, and Fed/macro contracts. |
| California status | Available — dispute pending (as of October 13, 2026). See Is Kalshi legal in California? for the court cases and change log. |

Polymarket
Ready to trade?
Kalshi: The regulatory leader.
Sign up at KalshiCertain limitations apply. The offer is available to new users only, subject to the terms and conditions at kalshi.com/tc/500. 18+ only. Restrictions and eligibility requirements apply. Event contract trading involves significant risk and is not appropriate for everyone. Please carefully consider if it is appropriate for you in light of your personal financial circumstances. Kalshi products are not available in all jurisdictions. See kalshi.com/regulatory for more information.
Verdict: deepest liquidity on marquee outcomes, the right pick if you want price depth. Its CFTC-regulated US app opened in December 2025 and runs through QCX, the exchange Polymarket acquired, under the same federal commodities framework as Kalshi.
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Sports covered | Major US leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL), Premier League, Champions League, World Cup, UFC, tennis Grand Slams. Strongest on outcomes that attract international flow. |
| Funding | US dollars inside the app. No crypto wallet needed. |
| Fees | The fee is shown on each order before you confirm. |
| Best for | Traders who want the deepest order book on the biggest contracts (Super Bowl winner, World Cup winner, NBA Finals MVP). |
| California status | Available — dispute pending (as of October 13, 2026), under the same CFTC framework as Kalshi. See Is Polymarket legal in California? |
Details on the Polymarket platform page. Side-by-side comparison: Kalshi vs Polymarket.
ProphetX
Verdict: our pick if you only trade sports. ProphetX is a CFTC-licensed exchange where you trade against other people, so there is no house margin in the price. It covers NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, college football, soccer and combat sports on iPhone, Android and web, and is available in 49 states plus D.C. (not Nevada). More on the ProphetX platform page.
OG by Crypto.com
Verdict: a fit if you already use Crypto.com. OG offers CFTC-regulated event contracts on sports, crypto and economics and accepts California residents (OG's minimum age is 18; we recommend 21+). More on the OG platform page.
Sleeper
Verdict: a fantasy and pick'em app, not a CFTC-regulated exchange. Sleeper is built around its fantasy-sports product and group chats. Check the Sleeper app for what is available in California.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Sports covered | NFL is the flagship; NBA, MLB, college football. Heavy focus on per-game and per-quarter contracts, weekly slates, and player props within the same app you're already using for fantasy. |
| Funding | ACH and debit card, USD. |
| Fees | Built into spread; transparent at the point of trade. |
| Best for | Existing Sleeper fantasy users, anyone who wants to trade alongside friends in group chats, NFL Sunday traders. |
| California status | Check the Sleeper app. It is a fantasy and pick'em app, not one of the CFTC-regulated exchanges above. |

Chalkboard
Ready to trade?
Kalshi: The regulatory leader.
Sign up at KalshiCertain limitations apply. The offer is available to new users only, subject to the terms and conditions at kalshi.com/tc/500. 18+ only. Restrictions and eligibility requirements apply. Event contract trading involves significant risk and is not appropriate for everyone. Please carefully consider if it is appropriate for you in light of your personal financial circumstances. Kalshi products are not available in all jurisdictions. See kalshi.com/regulatory for more information.
Verdict: a pick'em-style player-prop app, not a CFTC-regulated exchange. Chalkboard is built around NBA points, NFL receiving yards, and MLB strikeouts. Check the Chalkboard app for what is available in California.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Sports covered | NBA and NFL props are the core. NHL and MLB props in season. Limited team-level markets. Props are the whole product. |

| Fees | Per-trade fees; check current schedule on the platform. |
| Best for | Prop-focused traders, daily fantasy graduates, anyone with a player-research workflow. |

Novig
Verdict: peer-to-peer exchange for sharp traders who hate paying vig. No house, no spread maker. You trade directly against other users at prices you both agree to.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Sports covered | NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, college, and select internationals. Liquidity is thinner than Kalshi or Polymarket on most markets. |
| Funding | ACH and debit card, USD. |
| Fees | Commission on winning trades; no vig in the line. |
| Best for | Advanced traders who can place limit orders and wait, sharps who already know what edge they're looking for. |

How to trade this
Trade California's Legal Sports Markets in 3 Steps
- Start by signing up on Polymarket, a CFTC-regulated platform, and claim their exclusive sign-up offer to get started with event contracts.
- Fund your account with a responsible amount, perhaps $10-$50 to begin. Only risk what you can comfortably afford to lose, as markets can be volatile.
- Focus on markets specifically tied to sports outcomes, reading the resolution rules carefully. Use limit orders to control your entry and exit prices effectively.
Rebet
Verdict: not available to California residents. Rebet is a social, sweepstakes-style sports app built around group chats. You can use it only while you are physically in one of its eligible states.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Sports covered | NFL, NBA, college football, UFC. Curated headline contracts rather than full coverage of every market. |
| Funding | ACH and debit card, USD. |
| Fees | Built into product; transparent at confirmation. |
| Best for | Trading inside friend groups, copy-trading style flow, casual sports fans. |
| California status | No. Rebet is not available to California residents. |

Quick comparison: sports apps for Californians
| App | Key Details |

| OG by Crypto.com | CFTC-regulated event contracts · sports, crypto, economics · best for Crypto.com users |
| Novig | peer-to-peer exchange · USD · commission on wins · best for setting your own price |
| Sleeper | fantasy and pick'em app · check the app for California availability |
| Chalkboard | pick'em-style player props · check the app for California availability |
| Rebet | social sports app · not available in California |
Which California sports betting app should I start with?
A simple decision tree:
- Want one app that covers everything? → Kalshi
- Trade big-game outcomes in size? → Polymarket
- Only trade sports and want no house margin? → ProphetX
- Want to place limit orders and set your own price? → Novig
- Already use Crypto.com? → OG
Most California traders end up using two apps: Kalshi for breadth plus one specialized app for their primary use case. There's no penalty for that. KYC takes minutes per app and there are no minimum-deposit traps.
Start with Kalshi. Add a second app, ProphetX, Novig or Polymarket, once you know your actual use case.
Are offshore sports betting apps like Bovada legal in California?
No, and we don't recommend them. Bovada, BetUS, MyBookie, BetOnline, and similar offshore operators have no US regulatory authorization. They operate from Costa Rica, Curaçao, and Panama, and they accept California users despite having no US licensing.
The risks are real: no US consumer protection, no FDIC-equivalent deposit insurance, no recourse if your withdrawal is denied, and no federal dispute process. Several offshore books have collapsed historically with US customer balances trapped offshore. Payment processors increasingly refuse offshore-book transactions, leading to stuck deposits.
If your goal is to legally bet on sports from California, federally regulated event contracts on Kalshi, Polymarket, or ProphetX give you the same outcome exposure with full US regulatory backing. There is no upside to going offshore.
Are these sports apps safe?
Kalshi, Polymarket, ProphetX and OG are CFTC-regulated and operate under the same federal commodities framework that governs CME futures and options markets. That means: federal oversight of contract design, capital and segregation requirements, mandatory KYC, IRS reporting, and a federal dispute process if anything goes wrong.
That doesn't make trading safe in the financial sense. You can still lose money on every trade. It means the platforms themselves operate under the same regulatory rigor as a futures broker, not a Costa Rica-based offshore book.
Do I owe California tax on winnings from these apps?
Yes. Gains from event contracts are taxable at both the federal level and under California state income tax. California's top marginal rate is 13.3%. Kalshi provides a profit-and-loss statement for your trades.
What's settled and what isn't, including what Kalshi sends you and how Polymarket US trades are reported, is in our prediction market taxes guide.
This isn't tax advice; talk to a California-licensed CPA if your activity is meaningful.
The bottom line
California has no legal traditional sportsbook in 2026, and that's not changing soon. The legal alternative is real and broader than most California sports fans realize: five apps accept California residents today. Pick one to start, add a second when you know what you want from it.

How we rank
The ranking comes from the scorecard on our methodology page. Each platform is scored on five things:
- Regulation and California availability (25%): who regulates the platform and whether California residents can open an account.
- Fees and order fills (25%): trading, deposit and withdrawal fees, and how our test orders were filled.
- Market range and liquidity (20%): how many markets are live and how much trading there is on the main contracts.
- Deposits and withdrawals (15%): which payment methods work and how long the money takes to arrive.
- App quality and support (15%): app stability, the website, and how support answered a test request.
The sign-up offer is shown for each platform but is not part of the score.

Frequently asked questions
What sports betting apps are legal in California?
These event-contract apps are available in California: Kalshi (broadest coverage), Polymarket (deepest liquidity), ProphetX (sports-first), OG by Crypto.com and Novig (peer-to-peer exchange); Sleeper and Chalkboard are fantasy and pick'em apps, not CFTC-regulated exchanges. The legal footing of event-contract apps for sports contracts is being tested in court: the 9th Circuit, which covers California, sided with Nevada against Kalshi at the preliminary stage in August 2026. Rebet is not available in California.
Which sports betting app is best in California?
For most California traders, Kalshi is the right starting point: broadest sports coverage, USD funding and the longest CFTC track record. Add a second app once you know your use case: ProphetX if you only trade sports, Novig to set your own price, Polymarket for deeper liquidity on marquee outcomes.
Is DraftKings legal in California?
No. DraftKings Sportsbook is geofenced out of California and unavailable to California residents. California has not authorized online sports betting (Propositions 26 and 27 both failed in November 2022), so DraftKings cannot operate there. The alternative for California sports traders is event contracts on platforms like Kalshi, Polymarket and ProphetX.
Is FanDuel legal in California?
No. FanDuel Sportsbook is geofenced out of California and unavailable to California residents. Same reason as DraftKings. California has no legal online sports betting. FanDuel's daily-fantasy product remains available in California, but its sportsbook does not. CFTC-regulated event-contract apps are the legal alternative.
Are there free sports betting apps in California?
Most CFTC-regulated apps let you sign up and browse markets for free, but real-money trading requires KYC and funding. Minimum trade sizes start at $1 on most platforms, so the entry cost is low. Sweepstakes-style 'free' apps that operate in California are not the same legal category as event-contract apps and have their own rules and limitations.
Are these available in California sports apps safe to use?
The regulated exchanges are held to federal standards. Kalshi, Polymarket, ProphetX and OG run CFTC-regulated exchanges with capital, segregation, KYC and dispute-resolution requirements. Novig, Sleeper and Chalkboard work differently, so read each app's terms. None of this makes trading risk-free: you can lose money on every trade.
Can I use Bovada or BetUS legally in California?
No. Bovada, BetUS, MyBookie, BetOnline, and similar offshore operators have no US regulatory authorization. They accept California users despite operating from Costa Rica, Curaçao, or Panama, but offer no US consumer protection, no FDIC-equivalent deposit safety, and no recourse if your funds are frozen. CFTC-regulated event-contract apps give you the same outcome exposure with full US backing.
Do I owe California state tax on app winnings?
Yes. Gains from event contracts on any of these apps are taxable at both the federal level and under California state income tax. California's top marginal rate is 13.3%. Kalshi provides a profit-and-loss statement for your trades. Consult a California-licensed CPA for your specific situation.
Is Polymarket available to eligible California residents (dispute pending) to use?
Available — dispute pending (as of October 13, 2026). Eligible Californians can use the Polymarket US app (Polymarket's minimum age is 18; we recommend 21+), which runs on a CFTC-regulated exchange and clearing organization and trades in US dollars. It is our top-ranked platform for liquidity. New users who deposit $10 with code CAPREDICTS get a $25 trading bonus. Keep your trade history: profits are taxable federally and in California.
How does OG (Crypto.com) compare to Kalshi for California users?
OG (Crypto.com) is our #4 platform for California residents and Kalshi is #3. OG offers CFTC-regulated event contracts on sports, crypto and economics through a familiar mobile app. Kalshi covers a wider mix: politics, economics, weather and culture as well as sports. Both are alternatives to sportsbooks because they list event contracts rather than take bets.
