Two Polymarkets — make sure you're using the right one

Polymarket Global (USDC, web + crypto wallets) is geoblocked from the US. The Polymarket app you can legally use as a US resident is the CFTC-regulated US iPhone app, operated by Polymarket's QCEX subsidiary. Markets, balances, and account history do not transfer between the two.

    Our Polymarket review

Polymarket is the brand most people think of when they hear "prediction market" — it is the platform that called the 2024 US presidential election weeks before the major pollsters, and the venue where the biggest cultural and political contracts trade in the world. After being unavailable to US traders for several years, Polymarket relaunched in the US in late 2025 as an iPhone-only app, regulated through its acquisition of QCEX, a CFTC-designated contract market.

Using the US iPhone app from California, the experience is meaningfully different from the global Polymarket I used to trade on with USDC. The US app is dollar-denominated, runs over Plaid for deposits, and only lists markets that have been approved for the regulated US venue. Liquidity on flagship political and macro markets is excellent — often the deepest in the industry — but the long-tail catalog (niche crypto, foreign politics, internet drama) lives on the global app you cannot access from a US IP.

If you are on Android or desktop only, Polymarket is not currently a viable choice in the US — there is no Android app and no web trading. For iPhone-first traders who care about big political and cultural contracts, it is the sharpest pricing you can get under US regulation.

Is Polymarket legit and legal in California?

The Polymarket US iPhone app is operated by QCEX, a CFTC-designated contract market that Polymarket acquired in 2025. That makes it federally regulated under the same statute as Kalshi and Crypto.com's OG exchange — not a sportsbook, not an offshore book, not a sweepstakes.

On California: federally regulated event contracts are not covered by California's sports-betting or gambling statutes. The CA Attorney General has not issued any action against Polymarket's US app, and I deposit and withdraw from a California bank without restriction.

Important nuance: the older Polymarket Global product (USDC, crypto wallets, run on Polygon) remains geoblocked from US IPs and is not the version US residents should use. If you previously used Polymarket Global and have a balance there, those funds are not accessible from the US app.

    What is Polymarket?

Polymarket is a cftc-regulated (us iphone app) that lets users take positions on the outcomes of real-world events — sports, politics, economics, and culture. Founded in 2020, it operates under U.S. federal commodities law, which makes it available to traders in every state, including California.

What sets Polymarket apart is its positioning: the world's largest prediction market, now live on iphone in the us.. That's not marketing copy — it's reflected in the product, the markets offered, and the kind of trader who sticks around.

    Is Polymarket legal in California?

Yes. Polymarket operates as a CFTC-regulated venue, which means it falls under federal commodities law rather than state gambling law. California's lack of a legal online sportsbook doesn't apply here — event contracts are a different financial instrument with different regulators.

That said, the legal picture is still being contested. Some state attorneys general have challenged certain platforms; the CFTC has consistently defended its jurisdiction. For the full backdrop, see our California legality guide.

What can you trade on Polymarket?

Polymarket covers Politics, Culture, Sports, News. New markets are added weekly.

Practically, that means contracts on game outcomes, championship futures, player and team milestones, election results, Fed decisions, inflation prints, award shows, and cultural events.

    How does Polymarket work?

Every contract on Polymarket resolves to either $1 (yes) or $0 (no). The price you pay reflects the market's implied probability - a contract at 62¢ means a 62% chance.

You don't have to hold to resolution. You can sell at any time — if the price moves to 78¢, you can lock in the gain. This is the single biggest mental shift from sportsbook betting: you're trading a price, not placing a wager. For the full mechanic, read how event contracts work.

    How much does Polymarket charge?

Polymarket charges fees on a per-contract basis, typically a small fraction of a cent per contract or a low percentage of the trade. Compared to a sportsbook's 5-10% built-in vig, the fee structure is dramatically more transparent.

Liquidity varies by market — high-profile events like presidential elections or playoff series are deep, while niche markets can be thin. Always check the bid-ask spread before taking a position.

    Polymarket US fees

The US app uses a flat trading-fee model that's simpler than Kalshi's curved schedule. Here's the breakdown as of May 2026:

    FeeAmount
    Deposit (ACH via Plaid)Free
    Withdrawal (ACH)Free
    Trading fee2% of notional, capped
    Maker rebate$0
    Inactivity fee$0
    Deposit (ACH via Plaid)
1–3 business days. No debit-card deposit option in the US app yet.
    Withdrawal (ACH)
Typically 1–2 business days back to the linked bank account.
    Trading fee
Charged on filled orders; resting orders that don't fill cost nothing.
    Maker rebate
No liquidity rebates in the US venue.
    Inactivity fee
    No dormancy fees.

Polymarket's US fee schedule may change as the venue matures. Verify on polymarket.com or in-app under Settings → Fees before placing large orders.
