What is the highest-grossing movie of 2026 prediction market?
- It's a multi-outcome contract listed on Polymarket and Kalshi that resolves December 31, 2026 to whichever 2026 release has the highest worldwide (or in some markets, US domestic) box-office gross. Polymarket's version has $3.59M in volume as of April 2026.
Who is the current favorite?
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day at 51% on Polymarket. Avengers: Doomsday is at 29%, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie at 9%, The Odyssey (Christopher Nolan) at 3.7%. The full slate also includes Toy Story 5 (June 19), Zootopia 2 (November 25), and a long tail of smaller contenders.
Why does Spider-Man lead Avengers: Doomsday?
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens July 31, giving it five months of domestic and international play before year-end. Avengers: Doomsday opens December 18, which means most of its gross will come in the final two weeks of the year — leaving a structurally smaller window to accumulate the annual top spot, even with a bigger opening weekend.
Can Californians trade these markets?
- Yes. Kalshi box-office contracts are CFTC-regulated and legal in California. Polymarket has restored US access and offers the same markets with crypto-funded volume. Both are accessible to California residents under federal commodities law.
What's the biggest 2026 release I'm probably forgetting?
- Wicked: For Good already released in November 2025 (so it's not in the 2026 race). Within 2026: Mickey 17, Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning carryover, Zootopia 2 (Thanksgiving), and a Christopher Nolan adaptation of The Odyssey starring Matt Damon. Tracking suggests The Odyssey is meaningfully underpriced at 3.7%.
What changes pricing the most?
- Trailer drops, opening-weekend results, and rotten tomatoes scores. When a tentpole opens above tracking, every other contract reprices within hours. The June-July window (Mario Galaxy aftermath, Toy Story 5 opening, Spider-Man marketing ramp) is when the leaderboard changes fastest.
Is this the same as betting on the Oscars?
- Different category. Box-office contracts resolve to a specific commercial number (gross dollars). Awards contracts resolve to a subjective vote outcome. Both are CFTC-regulated event contracts on Kalshi and Polymarket; box-office markets carry deeper volume and tighter spreads.
What's a smart starting position?
- Most active traders pick a single contract they have an edge on (a director, a release-window read, an international market) rather than spreading across all eight outcomes. Spreading across all options usually loses to the implicit fees built into each contract.
