Legality in California
Kalshi is a CFTC-regulated exchange that accepts California residents (Kalshi's minimum age is 18; we recommend 21+). Chalkboard is a pick'em-style app that works under different rules, so check the Chalkboard app for availability in California. Courts are still deciding whether state gambling law can apply to sports event contracts; the 9th Circuit, whose rulings cover California, sided with Nevada against Kalshi at the preliminary stage in August 2026.
Markets and coverage
Kalshi covers sports, politics, economics, culture, weather, and crypto: the broadest US coverage in the regulated market. Chalkboard is player-prop focused: deep individual-player lines for NBA and NFL, with growing coverage in MLB and NHL. For breadth, Kalshi wins easily. Player props on Lakers, Warriors, or any individual NBA athlete are what Chalkboard is built around, as pick'em entries rather than exchange contracts.
Pricing & fees
Kalshi charges per-contract fees disclosed at order entry, publicly documented over a long period, with no sportsbook-style house margin. Chalkboard is a pick'em-style app, not an exchange, so check the Chalkboard app for its costs and terms.
User experience
Kalshi's interface is finance-forward: clean, category-organized, designed for breadth across many market types. Chalkboard's interface is purpose-built for player props: quick player search, line shopping, mobile-first execution. Different jobs, different UIs.
Who should use which
Use Kalshi if: you want broad market coverage, you trade politics or macro as well as sports, you want a single prediction market home base. Use ProphetX if: you only trade sports and want a CFTC-licensed exchange with peer-to-peer pricing. Use both if: you want breadth from Kalshi and sports pricing from ProphetX. Chalkboard is a pick'em-style player-prop app, not a CFTC-regulated exchange; check the Chalkboard app for what it offers in California.
How we rank
The ranking comes from the scorecard on our methodology page. Each platform is scored on five things:
- Regulation and California availability (25%): who regulates the platform and whether California residents can open an account.
- Fees and order fills (25%): trading, deposit and withdrawal fees, and how our test orders were filled.
- Market range and liquidity (20%): how many markets are live and how much trading there is on the main contracts.
- Deposits and withdrawals (15%): which payment methods work and how long the money takes to arrive.
- App quality and support (15%): app stability, the website, and how support answered a test request.
The sign-up offer is shown for each platform but is not part of the score.
Tested by Catie Di Stefano, who opens an account, deposits our own money, places trades and withdraws. The full process is on our methodology page.
